DEPARTMENTS ON BOARD SHIPS
- DECK DEPARTMENT: Administrative department of the ship .It takes care of navigation and cargo handling.
- ENGINE DEPARTMENT: This department of the ship takes care of the technical aspects of the ship including propulsion of the ship.
- CATERING DEPARTMENT: This department takes care of the housekeeping and catering onboard ship.
Master/Captain: Master is the highest rank onboard ship. He is the final authority of the ship and the head of all the departments on board ships. He is the reasonable person for any complications on board. Master should take care of all maritime affairs and compliance to all international regulations.
DECK DEPARTMENT HIERARCHY
- Chief officer-Head of deck department and incharge of deck maintenance
- 2nd officer-Navigation officer on board. Takes care of nautical publications and charts.
- 3rd officer- Life saving appliances and Fire fighting appliances maintenance.
- Cadets-A trainee officer under Chief officer.
- Bosun- Head and Most experienced of deck ratings.
- Able bodied seamen-Has a good experience at sea
- Ordinary seaman- He is the least experienced rating onboard
ENGINE DEPARTMENT HIERARCHY
- Chief engineer-Is the head of the engineering department on a ship.
- 2nd engineer-Supervising the machinery and systems in engine room.
- 3rd engineer-Incharge of main engine and it's maintenance
- 4th engineer-Incharge of Maintenance of machinery other than main engine.
- 5th engineer-Trainee engineer under second engineer.
- Oiler-Senior rating of the engine department
- Wiper-Most junior rating of the engine department.
- Electrical officer-Expert in handling electronic equipment on board.
- Fitter/Welder-Capable of machinery maintenance and repair.
CATERING DEPARTMENT
- Chief cook-Head of catering and housekeeping department
- General steward- Assistant to the chief cook in catering and Housekeeping.
