10 ways seafarer reduce stress onboard ships

Stress is the mental state which occurs to an individual because the way in which he/she perceives the events in his internal or external environment . This will create emotional illness and anxiety .Seafaring is a job which requires a good mindset and a good mental health. Most of the seafarers are suffering from stress onboard ships. This stress can cause fatigue and may lead to accidents as the work onboard needs your full attention. Stress can occur due to various reasons which may include, 
  • Being away from the family
  • No chances to Socialize
  • Sleep deprivation
  • Problems with anyone on board
  • Multinational crew onboard
  • Limited Recreational activities
For the mental wellbeing of the seafarers , these are few things that you can do to reduce your stress on board ships.

  1. Socializing with the crew: Maintaining a good relationship with the crew can help the seafarers to cop up with their stress. This means to talk to the members of the crew in an informal manner when there is time and maintain a good relationship with them.       
  2. Share your problems: Share all your problems with someone. It can relieve you a lot from stress and reduce your burden. This can be anyone like your friend on board , your partner or anyone in your family.                                                                               
  3. Don't engage in any personal problems with anyone in the crew: Have good and healthy conversations with the crew . As far as possible avoid arguments in personal lives. Being good to everyone will make you feel good.                                                   
  4. Listen to music: Music is effective in relaxation and stress management . Listening to music will make you focused and concentrated on your work.                                         
  5. Watch good movies : Watch movies in your free time to make yourselves feel comfortable. Also watch documentaries about your work and enhance your knowledge. This will relieve your work pressure .                                                                  
  6. Regular Exercise: Regular exercise relieves your stress by making you active and boosts the production of endorphins(These are hormones which have a control stress. Its high production can reduce the stress.) Exercise and thereby reduce your worries on various factors.                                                                                                                           
  7. Speak to your family: Its really hard to be away from your family. Talking to your family regularly will make you feel good . This will help in reducing your loneliness.   
  8. Build your Hobbies: Find your hobbies and build them in your leisure time and keep you engaged .                                                                                                                      
  9. Get good sleep: Don't stay late for bed . A good amount of sleep can reduce your stress and keep you away from fatigue. It will improve your concentration, regulates mood, makes you active and enhance decision making.                                                         
  10. Meditation: Try to save 10 minutes daily to do meditation. It will swipe out a day's stress and makes restores inner peace.
